Beaubriar History

Elaine, Michelle and Paul DeChambeau

Paul & Elaine

My husband Paul and I purchased our first Irish Setter, Pinecrest’s Carrageen Rhu, CD in November, 1971.  Rhu was out of an Irish Import bred to Louis Iacobucci’s Ch. Celou’s Riolex Macrory.  She never made it to the show ring but obtained her CD at the age of 7 years after being bred to Innisfree Gallant Lad, a Thenderin dog owned by Denis O’Driscoll.  Her daughter Erin along with 2 others were born December 8, 1975 on my living room chair, a week after examination by the vet determined that there were no puppies!  My 4 year old son Kevin came running to show me what Rhu just had!

Beaubriars Windsong Lady, CDX, Can.CD was the start of Beaubriar.  A deep devotion and dedication to the Irish along with an intense determination was developed and continues today with daughter Michelle and myself.

Erin was an outstanding obedience dog with many wins and several High in Trials, well on her way in UD training.  She was the first Irish shown by my daughter Michelle in Junior Showmanship, then 9 years old, with dreams of becoming a top handler someday.

We then discussed the need for a show quality Irish with friends George and Barbara Brodie of Seaforth who fortunately lived in the next town to us.  Paintings of the Famous CH Seaforth’s Dark Rex and CH Seaforth’s Red Velvet were given to and are still maintained by Michelle and myself.

George made it possible to obtain CH Windscent Whisper, CD, VC from Sid Marx and Joyce Nilsen in 1978.  Whisper’s sire was CH Thenderin William Muldoon, 1974 National Specialty Winner and 1975 No. 1 Irish Setter.  Whisper was handled solely by Michelle, to whom she was given as a Christmas gift.  She completed her CD in 1982 with a Specialty High in Trial and a 4th out of 18 in Nov. B at the National Specialty.  She also achieved Irish Setter Versatility Certificate #59 the same year.

Michelle finished her first owner-handled Champion in 1983 when Whisper went WB, BOW and BOB over Specials then went on to take a Group 1 for 5 pts over an entry of 405 Sporting Dogs at the large Springfield Cluster Thanksgiving weekend shows.  Dreams did come true for a 16 year old and her “larger” 79 pound Irish!

Whisper, bred several times, only produced 2 puppies when bred to CH Hallmark’s London Legacy (CH Thenderin Vintage of Brynlaw x Hallmark Wagon To The Stars)Beabriars Careless Whisper’s show career ended when injured after being hit by a car.

Michelle being very active in Junior Showmanship qualified for Westminster in 1980 & 1981 with a bitch co-owned with Joan Earley, CH Millbrooks Bryar Rose, CDX, Can. CD, VC.  She qualified in 1983 with CH Thenderin Attribute and in 1984 with Am. & Can. CH Ronita Rainmaker.

Am. & Can. CH Ronita Rainmaker (Am. & Can. CH Candia Indeed x Ch. Redwhiskey’s Maidavictory) was purchased as a young male in 1980 from Bob & Anita Dunn (Ronita).  He was a smaller standard male 28”.  Flashy, dark, well angled with a large white (bib) he finished quite easily here and in Canada.

CH Thenderin Attribute, Jamie, was purchased as a puppy in 1981 from Bob & Ann Savin Dunn (Thenderin East).  Her sire CH Thenderin Goin’ The Distance (Rocket) was by CH Thenderin The Heir Apparent going back to CH Thenderin Legacy and CH Thenderin Wind Ruler.  Her dam CH Ronita California Dreamin’ (Sister) was a little powerful moving bitch by CH Thenderin William Muldoon out of well known CH Redwhiskey’s Royal Victory.

Both of these dogs were purchased because they combined the best qualities and bloodlines of the great dogs of the past that I had come to admire and respect and deeply wanted to be a part of.

CH Thenderin Attribute, who will always be one of my most special Irish, when bred to Am. & Can. CH Ronita Rainmaker (Scooter) in 1984, produced our first homebred champions.  Both of which finished from the Bred by Exhibitor Class and when specialled were in the Top 10 Irish Setters.

CH Beaubriar’s Comin’ Attraction (Magnum) had many Specialty Best Puppy wins and National Specialty placements.  In 1985 at 15 months he was WD and BOW at Eastern Irish Setter Association Combined Setters Specialties for 5 points.  He finished at Eastern Irish Setter Association Fall Specialty under 3 years of age.  He was a Specialty Best in Show and Multiple Best of Breed winner.  In 1986 Magnum was ISCA Dunbrook trophy runner-up for Best of Winners and we were ISCA Blueprint trophy runner-up for Breeder-owner.

CH Beaubriars Sneak Preview, JH (Sonnet) as a puppy had many Best Puppy, Best in Sweeps and Best Opp. In Sweeps.  Her most memorable puppy achievement was 1st in the 6-9 class out of 21 at the 1985 National Specialty.  She was WB and BOW for 3 Pt. Major at 12 months.  She finished with 3 Majors from BBE and was a Multiple Best of Breed winner.  Sonnet was ISCA Homestead trophy winner for puppy class wins in 1985.

A repeat breeding in 1986 produced CH Beaubriars Double Agent, JH (Travis), who finished in 1989 with a 4 Pt. Major at Irish Setter Club of Central Connecticut Specialty in the aftermath of a torrential coastal hurricane from down South.

CH Beaubriars Double Feature, JH (Toni) finished with Back to Back Majors two weeks before Travis at Somerset Hills and Westchester KC weekend 1989.

Having accomplished many VC passes with our Irish, we decided to try Sonnet and Toni in Junior Hunt tests as many judges told us they possessed outstanding field potential in their ability to cover ground and find and point game.  This proved to be very true as our dogs were always in the 4 placements over large entries of “field” dogs!

Sonnet and Toni went on to become the first two Irish Setter Bitches in New England to obtain the Junior Hunter Title!  We are very fortunate that we continue to produce Irish that possess the instinct to hunt in addition to competing in the show ring.

One of my most cherished memories of that era was when CH Thenderin Attribute, who at the age of 8 won the Brood Bitch Class out of 10 at the 1989 National in Newport, RI with these notable offspring.

CH Beaubriars Double Feature, JH bred to CH Kerry-Eire Talisman in 1991 produced CH Beaubriars SeaHawk owned by Pat Kenwell who is the sire of Specialty winning and champion offspring.

CH Beaubriars Easy Goer, JH (Texas) was from the breeding of Beaubriars Fatal Attraction (a Magnum daughter) to CH Beaubriars Double Agent, JH in 1989.  Texas was pointing game at 4 months of age.  A little, dark, heavy boned male with a large ground covering stride.  He was known just as the Little Man.

CH Beaubriars Sneak Preview, JH bred to Am. & Can. CH Meadowlarks Wyndjammer in 1990 produced CH Beaubriars Moonstruck (Courtney), a really pretty, little, very angulated bitch who could fly was the only survivor in a litter of 7.  We lost her sister to bloat at 11 months.  Courtney was 2nd in 6-9 class out of 36 at the 1991 ISCA National.  She died at the early age of 5 due to surgery complications.

Sonnet bred to Am. & Can. CH Devlins Northstar (Am. & Can. CH Meadowlarks Wyndjammer x Am. & Can. CH Meadowlarks Sunshine Dolly, Am. Can. CD) in 1992 produced CH Beaubriars Bewitched owned by Pat Kenwell; Beaubriars Mystic Trance, owned by Jan Newport, CH Beaubriars Sorceress and CH Beaubriars Fantasia.  All those finished had Specialty Major wins.  Bewitched bred in 1994 to CH Rusticwoods Song of Hawaii (CH Quailfields Mak’n Business x CH Rusticwoods Made In Heaven) 1998 Westminster BOB produced CH Runfree Time Machine, Runfree Makin’ Magic and CH Beaubriars Magic Connection (Hunter)Hunter  bred to Mystic Trance in 1996 produced CH Beaubriars Casual Affair (Ashley).  She finished with her 4th Major and was BOW at ISC Long Island Specialty in New York in February, 1999.  By 10 months old she had won 9 points, Sporting Puppy Gr. 2, 2 Majors, 4 Major Reserves, many Specialty class wins and was 1996 ISCA Homestead trophy runner-up for puppy wins.

Hunter, Winner of Multiple Specialties and Best of Breeds and Group Placing when bred to CH Beaubriars Sorceress in 1998 produced several outstanding youngsters.  Beaubriars Olympic Torch (Jeremiah).  He was pointed at 7 months, has many Specialty puppy class wins and was Best in Sweeps over an entry of 88 at Eastern Irish Setter Association Combined Setters Specialties in 1999, at 12 months.  Beaubriars Innisfree Olympic Gold (Erin) owned by Denis O’Driscoll.  She also has Specialty Class and Best Puppy wins and a Sporting Puppy Group 4th.

We acquired 2 puppies from Jean Roche’s Saxony Kennel and feel they will be an excellent addition to our kennel.  Saxony’s Wild Irish Rose – Taylor (CH Copperleigh’s Tegan O’Balcaire x CH Saxony’s Crème De La Crème) and Saxony’s Snow in August – Fonzie (CH Meadowlark’s Irish Monarch x CH Saxony’s Southern Nights).  At just 6 months his first weekend shown Fonzie accomplished – Best Opp in Sweeps, Reserve Winners Dog to 4 Pt. Major and Best Puppy at ISC Long Island Spec in New York in February, 1999.  The following day he was 2nd in sweeps to Taylor’s brother then went Best Puppy over an entry of 57 at Eastern Irish Setter Association Combined Setters Specialties.  We expect a great future for these two puppies.

We have been members of the Irish Setter Club of America and Irish Setter Club of New England since 1975.  I was the Secretary of The Irish Setter Club of New England for 7 years.

We hope to be as blessed in the future with good dogs and good fortune as we have been in the past.
